How to use Add page numbers

  1. Open the PDFMerged files work well — number them after merging.
  2. Choose stylePosition, format, first number, size, color and margin.
  3. ApplyNumbers are added to each page; download the result.

Formats

Choose a bare number, “Page 1”, “1 / 12”, “Page 1 of 12” or “- 1 -”. The total is calculated from the pages that get a number, so skipping a cover page gives “Page 1 of 11” on page two of a twelve-page file.

Starting at another number

Set “First number” when the PDF is a chapter of a longer work — chapter two can start at 37. Combined with “Don’t number the first page”, the cover stays clean and numbering starts on the next page.

Rotated and landscape pages

Numbers follow the page as it is displayed, so a landscape page that is stored rotated still gets its number at the visual bottom, reading upright.

Numbering a court or exam bundle

Bundles often require “Page X of Y” on every page so nothing can be silently removed. Pick that format, bottom right, and tick “Don’t number the first page” if the cover sheet must stay clean. Numbering then starts at 1 on the second page; set the first number to 2 if the numbers should match the physical page positions a viewer shows. If the bundle continues an earlier volume, set the first number to where the last one ended.

Need more than one step? The Workbench runs Add page numbers together with other operations on the same file in one go — for example merge → compress → protect.

Questions about Add page numbers

Can I use Roman numerals?

Not yet; numbers are Arabic digits.

Can I number only some pages?

You can skip the first page. For other ranges, split the PDF, number the part, and merge back.

Will numbers cover my content?

Increase the distance from the edge if your page has a footer at the bottom margin.

Can I change the colour and size of the numbers?

Yes — set the font size in points and pick any colour. A mid-gray at 9–10 pt is unobtrusive for reports; legal bundles often use black at 11–12 pt so numbers survive photocopying.
