N-up PDF — several pages per sheet

Shrink slide decks into handouts, save paper when proofreading, or print a contact sheet of a long document. Pages are placed as vectors, so text stays crisp.

How to use N-up

  1. Open the PDFAny page size works; mixed sizes are fitted into equal cells.
  2. Choose layoutPages per sheet, sheet size, orientation, order, margins and optional borders.
  3. CreateDownload a new PDF where each sheet holds several original pages.

How the layout is chosen

With orientation on “Automatic”, 2-up, 6-up and 8-up layouts of portrait pages go on a landscape sheet (two tall pages side by side), while 4-up, 9-up and 16-up use the same orientation as the source. Each page is scaled to the largest size that fits its cell without distortion and centered.

Vector, not screenshots

The original pages are embedded as reusable page objects rather than rendered images. Zoom in on a 16-up sheet and the text is still sharp, and the file stays small because fonts and images are shared.

Reading order

“Left→right, then down” follows normal reading order. “Top→bottom, then across” fills columns first, which some people prefer for printed indexes.

Saving paper on a long printout

A 40-slide deck printed 4-up on Letter is 10 sheets instead of 40, and slides stay readable. Lecture notes with small type work best at 2-up, while 9-up and 16-up suit storyboards or thumbnail contact sheets. Turn the thin border on when pages have white backgrounds so the cells don’t blur into each other.

Need more than one step? The Workbench runs N-up pages per sheet together with other operations on the same file in one go — for example merge → compress → protect.

Questions about N-up pages per sheet

What is N-up printing?

Printing N logical pages on one physical sheet — for example 4-up means four pages per sheet, two across and two down.

Is 2-up the same as a booklet?

Not quite. 2-up keeps the natural order (1-2, 3-4). Booklet imposition reorders pages for folding; that is planned for a later version.

Can I add borders between pages?

Yes, a thin gray frame around each page is on by default and can be switched off.

Can I N-up a document with mixed page sizes?

Yes. Every source page is scaled to fit its cell while keeping its proportions, so a landscape page in a portrait document gets smaller rather than distorted. Choose “Automatic” orientation and the sheet turns to whichever direction wastes the least space for the chosen layout.
