How to use Merge PDF
- Add the PDFsChoose two or more files, or drop a whole batch onto the drop zone.
- Set the orderUse ↑ ↓ on each row, or “Sort A→Z” for numbered scans like scan-01, scan-02.
- Merge and savePress Merge PDFs. The combined file is built in memory and offered as a download.
What merging actually does
Each page is copied object-for-object from its source file into a new document, so text stays selectable, vector drawings stay sharp and nothing is re-compressed. The merged file is usually close to the sum of the inputs. Bookmarks and form fields from the sources are not carried over — the result is a clean page sequence.
When it is useful
Bundling an application packet (cover letter, résumé, references), joining monthly statements before sending them to an accountant, or putting a two-sided scan back together after the front and back pages came out as two files. For the last case, merge first and then use Reorder pages to interleave them.
Limits
Everything happens in your device’s memory. A modern laptop handles a few hundred pages without trouble; very large batches (1 GB+) can exhaust a phone’s memory. Password-protected inputs need to be unlocked first with Unlock PDF.
A worked example
Say you have a signed cover letter, a 12-page proposal and a scanned appendix. Drop all three, use ↑ ↓ until the cover letter is first, and merge. The proposal’s text stays selectable, the scan stays an image, and each page keeps its own size — a Letter proposal and an A4 appendix can live in one file without being stretched to match.
Need more than one step? The Workbench runs Merge PDF together with other operations on the same file in one go — for example merge → compress → protect.
Questions about Merge PDF
Is there a limit on how many PDFs I can merge?
No fixed limit. The practical ceiling is your device’s memory; dozens of typical office PDFs merge in a couple of seconds.
Does merging reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied, not re-rendered, so text and images are byte-identical to the originals.
Can I merge a PDF that has a password?
Remove the password first with Unlock PDF (you need to know it), then merge the unlocked copy.
Can I compress the merged file right away?
Yes — after merging, press “Compress” under “Continue with this result”. The file is handed over inside your browser without re-uploading anything.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
Not directly — an encrypted file has to be opened with its password first. Run it through Unlock PDF, then merge the unlocked copy. If you need the merged file locked again, finish in Protect PDF or chain both steps on the Workbench.
