How to use Overlay PDF

  1. Add two PDFsFirst the base document, then the overlay (letterhead, background, stamp).
  2. Choose howOn top or underneath; use overlay page 1 everywhere, cycle, or page-for-page.
  3. CombineDownload the layered PDF.

Over or under?

“Underneath” is for backgrounds such as letterheads and pre-printed forms: the base page’s content is drawn on top. It works when the base document has a transparent background, which is the case for almost every PDF exported from a word processor. “On top” is for stamps, signatures and watermark artwork.

Repeat modes

A one-page letterhead normally goes on every page (“use overlay page 1”). A two-page overlay with a first-page and follow-up design can be cycled, or matched page-for-page so overlay page 3 lands on base page 3.

Putting letters on letterhead

Export your letter from a word processor without a header, then use your one-page letterhead PDF as the second file. Choose “under” and “Use overlay page 1 on every page” to put the same letterhead behind each page, or “cycle” to alternate the pages of a multi-page overlay — for example a front and a back design for duplex printing. “Page by page” stamps overlay page 1 on page 1, page 2 on page 2, and stops when the overlay runs out. “Fit” keeps the letterhead’s proportions if its page size differs; “stretch” fills the page exactly.

Questions about Overlay PDF

My overlay covers the text — what happened?

The base pages probably have a white background, or you chose “on top”. Try “Underneath”; if the base still hides it, put the documents the other way round.

Do both PDFs need the same page size?

No. The overlay is scaled to fit each base page; choose “Stretch” to fill the page exactly.

Is this the same as a watermark?

Similar result, different input: Watermark PDF types text for you, Overlay uses any PDF artwork you already have.

Which file is A and which is B?

A is the document that keeps its pages and page count; B is the layer stamped over or under every page of A. Use the ↑ ↓ buttons to swap them if you added them in the other order.
