The title your PDF shows in a browser tab and the author name in its properties come from metadata. See what’s there and set it right.

How to use Edit metadata
- Open the PDFCurrent values are listed in a table, including creation and modification dates.
- Edit fieldsChange any field, or wipe everything first.
- SaveDownload the PDF with updated properties.
Why it matters
Search engines and browser tabs show the PDF title instead of the file name when one is set, so a published PDF titled “Microsoft Word - final_v7.docx” looks careless. Author and creator fields can also leak names of employees or internal software.
Wiping metadata
“Wipe all existing metadata first” clears the document information dictionary and removes the XMP metadata stream before writing only the fields you fill in. The producer is set to PaperCircuit unless you type another value.
Where metadata shows up
The Title field is what browsers show in the tab when a PDF is opened from a link, and what search engines often use as the result headline — a file called “Microsoft Word - draft_v7_final.docx” looks careless. Author and Subject appear in the document properties of every viewer, and Keywords help desktop search. Fix them before publishing a PDF on a website or sending it to a client.
Before you publish
The Creator and Producer fields often reveal which software and version made the file. Tick “Wipe all existing metadata first” to clear them along with the old descriptive fields and the XMP packet; only the values you type are written back.
Need more than one step? The Workbench runs Edit metadata together with other operations on the same file in one go — for example merge → compress → protect.
Questions about Edit metadata
Does changing metadata alter the content?
No, pages are untouched.
Are dates editable?
The modification date is set to now on save; creation date is kept unless you wipe metadata.
Is metadata the same as hidden text?
No — redaction and metadata are separate. Redact sensitive page content with Redact PDF.
Will the new title show up immediately?
In the downloaded file, yes. If the old title still appears on a website, the page is serving a cached copy — replace the file on the server and clear the cache.
